The Decemberists recently released “Here Come The Waves” which is an album visualization project for “The Hazards of Love”. I was very interested to watch this project because I felt that “The Hazards of Love” seriously lacked something. I had high hopes that visual images would make more sense of the record for me… I’m sad to say that I was wrong.

The first minute and a half of One Life Stand opens like an anthology of Hot Chip’s work. A pounding kick drum responds to an ambient wave of cheap-sounding synth (C.A.S.I.O.). Then, vocalist Alexis Taylor comes in with a lovely melody that is as soothing as it is delightfully catchy. So far, so good. Then you start to notice something. The busy electro-blips and chirps that you are used to are there, but they sound different. Your head is still nodding to the beat, but the feeling you get in your stomach isn’t the same one of undeniable joy that you experienced when you heard “Over and Over” and “Boy From School” for the first time. It doesn’t feel right. It sounds… too good. (read more…)

Featured Track: The Ballet - “House on Fire”.

Pitchfork compared this song to a re-imaging of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”. I completely agree. The opening synth line sounds just like the classic Lauper jam. It’s a cool song, none the less. This track is from the album “Bear Life” which is out now. More about the band on Myspace.
